This is a 40 Watt Mono-crystalline Portable Waterproof Solar Panel in black color (very rare) aluminum frame to charge your 12V battery or to run your science projects. The rare black color frame looks very nice. It is in a factory new package and is 100% brand new. The solar panel is assembled by Suntech, one of the highest quality solar cell makers. It is also waterproof. The working voltage for charging is 18V. If you need to use it to charge a car battery, you may need a charge controller to prevent the battery from overcharging. Connections included: alligator battery clamps. There are three types of Solar Cells on the market. All our Solar chargers use the best - Mono-Crystalline Solar Cells. Amorphous or Dual Junction Solar Glass are the cheapest but are only 7% energy efficient and have 5 years service life. They are big and heavy. Poly-Crystalline have 25 plus years of service life under direct sunlight and are 13% efficient. Mono-Crystalline have 25 plus years service life and are up to 20% efficient. This is the same type used in solar car racing. This type of solar cell is now in a worldwide shortage because only a few companies can manufacture this solar cell.

 "Monocrystal VS. Amorphous" 2008-03-02
By David M. Gammon (western Indiana)
This is the cheapest mono-crystal panel I've found, and it works as expected. However, remember (or learn) that when the sun shines full, you will generate the most power..... on a cloudy (or not full sun day) you will generate very little. If you have alot of full sun, go for monocrystal (ages slowest). However, if you have shady area or often cloudy, go for amorphous (ages faster). I have both types and so generate power every day. Monocrystal panels generate more per square inch so basically take LESS space to do the job. This panel is a good investment.

 "Solar PV System Casa de Baja" 2008-05-27
By L. Anderson (Baja, Mexico)
Location:

K55, Baja California, Mexico

Purpose:

Reduce dependence on buddy's noisy & smelly gas generator during weekend trips to beach shack. Week of rest after every usage.

System [June 2008]:

-> 60W total [~3.5Amps]. Two 20W [18Vmp] panel & two 10W [18Vmp] panels of the same mono-crystalline construction. [16AWG]

-> Morningstar MPPT 15 Amp Charge Controller. [14AWG]

-> Two [2] new 12V ~100AH deep cycle batteries [parallel ~200AH, 1/0AWG]

-> 700W AC inverter [4AWG]

-> 3.5KW gas generator to 6Amp AC batt charger for extra charging capacity when needed

Current Load:

-> Three [3] 12V x 26W fluorescent fixtures

-> Two [2] 12V x 15W fluorescent fixtures

-> One [1] 12V x 11W fluorescent fixture

-> One [1] 12V x 13W fluorescent fixture

-> Yamaha 2.1 speakers, 25W

-> Dual-port 12V car cig lighter adapter for mobile phone/iPod chargers.

Notes:

Panels are fixed @ slight SW & angle of ~35° from horizontal due to wind concerns, more than output, but very close to local latitude of ~32°. I was at the Baja house when the winds started the raging fires in SoCAL [2007], it was bad.

Voltage reads 20-24+V @ 3.4-3.6 Amps pre-load between 10:00AM & 3:30PM in June. Current load is lighting- OFF & ON 3-4 hours per night. Usually only one or two is ON at any given time. Lights work very well, almost like normal house. iPod is self-powererd to Yamaha 25W 2.1 speakers on inverter for 2-6 hours during day. Currently, we must use generator for TV/movies/games.

Expansion:

Another 20W panel for 80W total went in Dec 2008- another 80W will conclude a 160W system. Goal is 3 to 4 times per month...lighting, music, & occasional 26" 60W LCD using 15W DVD player & 25W 2.1 speakers for movies when surf is flat. [~700-800 Watt-Hours/day]

 "Good value for the price!" 2009-06-17
By Carl R. Collins (Seattle, WA United States)
I'm very pleased with the performance of the panels and with the way that they look. They perform quite well in portable applications and this is why they come with alligator clip connectors installed from the factory. Works great for charging batteries in diesel generators, car batteries, and even charging a deep cycle battery bank during the day for running a laptop at night. If you're planning to run your whole house or do something substantial with solar power, get yourself a solar array with 120 watt or higher panels wired in parallel in a 12 volt system. These portable solar panels are good to tinker with so you don't have to tinker on very expensive solar array systems that are better left un-tinkered with.

 "Mostly satisfied, except one thing" 2009-06-12
By G. Craig (Scottsdale, Az.)
I purchased four of these solar panels. Three of the panels worked correctly right out of the box. The fourth one did not work, and upon some inspection, I found that one of the solder joints to a wire was not soldered. The solar panel had no power output. I repaired the solder joint myself, and now the fourth solar panel works correctly. Overall, I am very satisfied with the way these panels function. In the sun, they perform as expected. I will probably buy more of these solar panels in the future and would recommend them to anyone wanting a compact, powerful solar panel.

 "Technical review of 20 Watt Solar Panel Model DJ-20D" 2009-05-19
By John Beukers (Vero Beach, FL USA)
Don't expect 20 Watts from this product. This is the second purchase of the Extreme Power Corp's 20W Solar Panel. The first unit did not meet the specifications defined on the label attached to the rear of the panel so I purchased this second unit to determine if the first unit was faulty. The second unit performed the same way. Here are the details:

I tested the two units at 1000W/Sq. Meter in the sun (Calibration by Davis Weather station solar sensor) at 25 degC and 55 degC into a resistive 16 ohm load (VPmax/IPmax). Here are the results, spec. values in parenthesis:

Open Circuit Voltage 19.4 volts (21.18V)

P Max at 25deg C - 16.5 Watts (20 Watts)

P Max at 55deg C - 12.8 Watts (Not specified but usual operating temp)

Voltage at Pmax - 14.45 at 55 deg C (17.5 at 25 deg C)

Short Circuit Current at 55 deg C 1.0 Amps (1.33 Amps at 25 deg C)

I reported these resulte to Extreme Power Corp but there has been no comment. Two points to bear in mind. 1. - There is a tendancy to overspecify solar panel performance and 2. - Specifications are for performance at 25 deg C and no solar panel operates at this temperature.

The maximum power output under any load conditions that I can get from these panels when cool (immediately after exposing to the sun) and at 1000 W/Sq. is 16.6 Watts.

In operation do not expect more than about 14 Watts from these panels - if that is ok then the product, although misprepresented gets a pass.

 "Power point is a little wierd..." 2008-08-18
By William Yerazunis
The panel took about a week to arrive; the packing was "wierd" (bubble wrap wrapped

around the cardboard! ) but it was intact.

The frame is aluminium, however the backing is plastic and the front side is glass

(not Tefzel). The whole thing is sealed with copious amounts of silicone rubber.

The wierd part of this panel is that it's _not_ exactly a 12-volt panel. In

full noonday sun, it puts out 20 volts open-circuit, at 1.03 amperes. This is

somewhat higher in voltage and lower in amperage than many would prefer; you will

need a charge controller at the very minimum as this _will_ cook a 12-volt

battery if used for a long time. Be sure your charge controller can handle

it- most charge controllers are rated for 16 to 18 volts input and this panel

puts out 20 volts or a bit more.

The panel comes with a pair of 6-foot wires (with something written on them

in Chinese), one red, one black, and permanently attached to a box centered in

the back of the panel. The other end of the wires go to a pair of alligator

clips, but as warned above, don't just clip these onto a lead-acid battery

for long term use unless either the battery is really big or you have a

charge controller.

A downside: lead-acid batteries typically charge at 14 volts; any additional

voltage is wasted. So, this panel loses about 30% of the energy produced

if the charge controller is not an active (buck-boost) or maximum power point

tracking (MPPT) controller.

On the up side, the 20 volts open circuit stayed pretty solid even when

the sun went behind clouds; what dropped was the amperage (down to 0.2 amps

when the array was shadowed, down to 0.1 amp when the sun was _behind_ clouds.

But the voltage stayed up, which means that even on a cloudy day your panel

will get something into the battery, maybe only 10% of a good bright day but at

least something. I think (but am not sure) that this is because it's a

monocrystalline panel.

 "Very Poor Product. Does not perform as advertised." 2009-09-23
By M. Trudeau (Philadelphia, PA USA)
I purchased the Black and Decker CPI100B to power my Pioneer Inno portable XM radio and portable Saitek speaker. When connecting both units to a fully charged CPI100B, the unit would cut out after 5 minutes. I then tried to power the portable speaker by itself with a 12W maximum output on the CPI100B and then unit would cut out after 20 minutes. The portable speaker typically lasts 2+ hours on 4AAA batteries so I was hoping for at least double the performance. The only use of this product would be to charge a cell phone or other very small electronic device. I doubt it could even power I cannot recommend this product and would advice people to not purchase it and perform research on a similar product.

With the advertized 4AH battery, I was hoping to power some of my low-mid power (15W to 40W) lights and tools. The B&D worked fine for the first few recharges (I was able to get 1-2 hours runtime) but then dropped to 20-30 minutes. I have the same problem with their 20W power supply. I am giving up on NiMH-based batteries and planning to try the Xantrex/Duracell with the Li-ion batteries.

I bought 3 of these battery packs because i hav a 20 and a 100 battery backup. well I thought these might do good for a game or a cell while on the road at times... WRONG!!!!!! As I said I bought3, and when i started to charge the first one I set it aside for about 2 hours and came back and it was charged. GREAT!!! then I hooked up the second one and did the same and came bac to it in about 2 more hours and it indicated that it was DEAD no life at all. So I let it charge for an additional amout of time. well 6 hours more and it was still DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I decided to try the 3rd one and hooked it up and charged it for about 2 hours and checked to see if it was holding a charge and NOPE!!!!! it wasnt charging either. the first battery pack held a chrge for about one day and that wasn't any where near a full charge back up. I tried to recharge it agin and none of these batteries are working. I really like the design and functionality of this power inverter. The cord is long enough to reach my lighter socket and the unit fits perfectly in my cup holders. This design has put the AC sockets in easy reach of my devices, while reducing the likelihood of the unit falling and becoming a distraction while driving.

It easily provides enough "juice" for my PC and other gadgets and the USB connection allows me to recharge my power hungry BlackBerry while on the road.

I liked it so much that I bought two for gifts to my co-workers. Highly recommended!

Product worked as advertised...for three weeks. Then it started beeping and the power light flashed red & blue but it would not charge any devices. I assumed it was the fuse (which is very easily replaced), but I was wrong. I contacted the seller and they very quickly and graciously agreed to send me a replacement unit. I have my fingers crossed, because this is a device that has really great potential and one that I really need.

Note: Be careful when replacing the fuse because there are 3 small metal parts that can be easily dropped & lost. If that happens, the whole device is rendered kaput.

 "Defective" 2009-07-06
By Lincoln V. Webbeking (Seattle, WA)
I bought one of these for a recent road trip to Yellowstone. When I plugged it in to the cigarette lighter, it did make a somewhat loud fan noise, but I didn't mind it very much and found that positioning (turning it on its side, or upside down) reduced the noise. However, after having my laptop plugged in for playing movies, the laptop died from a low battery--I figured it just wasn't powerful enough since my laptop draws 90W and the 100W on this inverter is a max value, vice sustained. So I next plugged in my cell phone charger, only to have my cell phone battery go completely dead a few hours later. I thought maybe the regular outlet plug wasn't working, so I tried charging my Blackberry using the USB port, and it too would not charge. Long story short, mine didn't work at all. I will be returning it soon and getting one with a higher max wattage.

 "Cooling fan is way too loud" 2008-12-03
By anonymous (Raleigh, NC)
Warning, the cooling fan inside this inverter is way too noisy to be used in a car. I can't believe Black & Decker can sell something like this without violating a noise safety level regulation, the fan is entirely too loud and the white noise it generates will slowly drive you crazy. It's especially bad if you have a dashboard where the 12V cigarette lighter is close to the steering wheel or heating/AC vents and not far from your ears, like I do. I used it during a 2 hour road trip and my ears were very unhappy by the end of the trip. No amount of music, road noise, or max fan speed setting on the AC could drown it out.

The physical design of the unit is great and the single AC and USB outlets are exactly what I needed. 100W is perfect for laptops, cell phones, and mp3 players, I've had no trouble using any of them with this inverter. I also like the way the neck bends 45 degrees in either direction, that helps get it out of the way somewhat (again, that depends on the placement of the 12V output on your dash).

I guess if your 12V cigarette lighter is near the floorboard this inverter might work for you, but the noise level of the fan is so bad that I would advise everyone to skip this and find something else.

 "Saved our sanity during travel" 2008-12-02

We bought this to power our laptop and cell chargers while on a road trip to the Grand Canyon. This unit was compact and easily packed in with the laptop. It worked flawlessly and saved our sanity by giving the kids power to "entertain" for some of the less senic drive times. The only minor complaint is the cooling fan, it just added a little white noise noticable at less than cruising speeds. On the plus side it also reminded us that it was sucking power when we would shut down the car. Overall we are very pleased with this purchase.
