I got this at my husband's request. He wanted this (for his Christmas present) as an emergency generator, especially in case of Earthquakes for our Northern California home. So far, so good!! It is a little less portable than we would have liked, (quite heavy) but is adequate. The electric start is really a plus. My husband set it up to try outside, after following directions for putting in oil, and then gasoline, and attaching it to a temporary ground wire outside. It worked fine when attached to a motor on a 120 volt extension cord. He brought it back into the garage where it will live, and has attached it to another metal ground (part of the metal piping for the electric furnace) as a more permanent ground. He had emptied the gasoline out. The plan now is just to leave it, and to be able to just add gasoline when needed, and use the key to start it. He left the key in place. This should work very well for our needs, which is very rare actual use, but hopefully enough to keep emergency things going for a few days in case of severe earthquake: we would be able to stay in the house rather than heading out on the road, or not haveing any power. (We also got the cover which is a good idea for keeping dust off if using rarely). It seems to work flawlessly!!

Last night during the heavy California rains, the electric went out. I grab the flashlight, pull off the cover that was included, put on the choke and on-switch and after two pulls, she was purring! Two pulls? Yes, because I'd been neglecting this kitten since June, when I last started her. Plugged in the fridge, two lights and the fish filter system. This thing rocks! The electric start died after 1 use. I checked the battery and it was fully charged. If I tap the solenoid with the key turned, it will start -- reminds me of an old car I once had. The pull start works nice and easy, so far -- but I paid the extra $50 for the electric start, so I'm not real pleased.



Also, I can not get this generator grounded. Tried connecting to an existing grounding rod and to my water pipes, no luck. I guess I'll try to my utility panel ground next -- my house sockets are grounded -- I double checked. If that doesn't work then I don't know what else to do.



Otherwise it seems to run well though have yet to put it to the test in an outage.



It is quieter than I expected.

I was looking for a generator for emergencies and for camping. The DuroMax by PowerMax is that unit. I read the other reviews and followed their recommendations. When it was delivered, only 6 days after I placed the order, I examined the box, it was in good shape, as was the generator. The only problem I had was the yellow plastic oil dip stick had fallen out and the threads were a little missed up. I called the number on the instructions to request a new oil dip stick. Their reprehensive helped me and I had a new dip stick within 72 hours.



I then followed the easy to understand directions and the unit started the first time. The electric starter is great, no more pulling on the rope, which made my wife very happy, when she needs to start the unit. The weight is not bad. No problem lifting it into the back of my pickup truck. I just leave it there while camping.



The unit is large enough to operate the air conditioner on my camping trailer and micro wave at the same time. It is a little louder than I had hoped, but nothing you cannot live with.

Not sure if damage occured before shipping just sure it was not after. Beware of product, it cost me $100.00 to get the control panel repaired. I received this item very quicky from Amazon (what else is new - they are always pretty fast) with packaging in very good condition. However, like others have found, the back of the air filter housing was cracked. The manufacturer was only too happy to replace when a copy of receipt is sent via email or fax. This generator is excellent. I have run mine for a few hours with no hiccups whatever. When I first started, it was just one light pull -- stated right up and runs smoothly and more quietly than other generators of this size. We went ahead and put in a 6-circuit transfer switch (the Generac prewired load manager/transfer switch Model 1276 from Amazon is perfect and pretty easy to install in 1/2 day), and chose 6 circuits for Winter power outages. With refrigerator/freezer, gas furnace (needed for forced air fan, glow igniter, gas safety circuit, thermostat, etc), TV, wireless internet, and 3 rooms of lights ALL on and operating at the same time (including startup on the furnace), this generator hardly seemed to notice. It also is very economical on gasoline - best I could find for this power capacity and price -- much better than most more expensive generators. Is it as wonderful as a Honda? Probably not, but considering the decent sound, great level power, gas ecoonomy and the fact that cost of the generator + transfer switch + licensed electrician charges (to wire-in and put switch in correctly for sure) was $1400+ less than even the Honda 3000 Watt generator by itself, I feel perfectly fine and happy about this purchase.

PROS: Easy set-up, Easy startups, 90% on first (light) pull. Large muffler. Two GFCI outlets. The engine governor adjusts quickly to load changes. Noise is typical for a generator this size. Voltage and frequency are stable, though the frequency was high by a smidgen, but acceptable (62 Hz). No noticeable EFI/RFI noise on my TV set. The unit isn't excessively heavy, which is a plus for putting it on blocks to drain the oil.



CONS: The starter rope is poorly located (fortunately it starts easily). The user manual isn't very technical and doesn't cover the outlet electrical specifications in much detail. The oil fill hole not very accessible (no filler tube). I recommend a small-diameter, flexible hose funnel to fill the unit with oil. The generator has no built-in hour meter. The oil drain plug on my unit was excessively tightened and required a 10mm 6-point socket, 3/8" extension, a ratchet, and a lot of muscle to break the plug loose. The fuel cut-off switch is located directly off of the tank, not near the carburetor, so the unit will run a minute or two after fuel cut-off, as it burns the fuel in the long fuel line path to the carb.



I added a Hardline hour meter (available on Amazon.com) to make maintenance tracking much easier. (Installation is simple: wrap a wire around the spark plug wire 5 times, zip-tie it and insert the other end of the wire into the meter body.)



Fuel consumption was 0.175 Gallons / kWh at 1,800 Watts load. (Ethanol-free 87 Octane gasoline was used).



ENGINE BREAK-IN: the engine on my unit is a 207cc 7HP OHV Chongqing AmPride aluminum engine. I used Mobil Clean 5000 10w30 oil for the break-in oil change intervals and Mobil 1 synthetic oil after the break in changes. For my break-in, I used a load of 1,800 Watts (15 Amps), consisting of a small ceramic heater and a halogen work light. Removal of the initial engine-wear filings via short-interval oil changes is very important, as this generator does not have an oil filter. The manual sets the first scheduled oil change at 20 hours or first month, however I strongly recommend several intermediate break-in oil changes much earlier.



* Changed oil at 5 unit hours (highly recommended by me, but not warranty required): the oil had several large metallic specks and a lot of fine, sparkly filings from the break-in wear.

* Changed oil at 10 unit hours (recommended by me, but not warranty required): no large specks, just fine sparkly filings, though much less than was present at 5 hours.

* Changed oil at 20 unit hours (Scheduled Maintenance): Oil looked good, engine appears to have broken-in properly. Filled with Mobil 1 synthetic oil.

I purchased the smaller 1200w ETQ generator several years ago, and was generally pleased with it. This one (3250/4000w) came with a broken air cleaner housing, and a leaking fuel tank. I called ETQ and they promptly sent repair parts. The generator runs good, and is very quiet (huge muffler). I got it to run a 220v water pump, construction site equipment, and my house in an emergency. So far, so good.

 "Very Nice Generator - good compromise" 2009-11-24

Got this about a month ago for tailgates. Haven't put much time on it yet, but here are some intitial comments:



1) Mine did not come with a DC plug / adapter. Called ETQ and they said that the newer ones do not have that feature.



2) There is an error in the manual. It says to use 10w30 oil. That is NOT CORRECT. Use only 2 cycle oil. The manual is wrong.



I tested the sound level using my radio shack sound level meter and found that at 23 feet it produced around 59 dbA and at 9 feet it produced about 67 dbA. I would characterize the sound as louder than the Honda EU2000 / EU1000, but overall not too objectionable as it's kind of a low pitch sound. It's definitely why the unit is less expensive than the Honda EU, which I could not justify price-wise.

Got the generator for lightning my power panel which I needed to replace. Worked fine the first 6 hours. Next day, fuel was running out of the carburetor. No expertise here, but took off float bowl, air cleaner cover, sprayed choke/carburetor cleaner, and applied air pressure . Still, same problem. Used flashlight and batteries to finish my panel wiring. Next day took bowl apart and noticed gas inside the plastic float. Drained float and put a thin coat of Krazy Glue around the seam where it seemed to be leaking. With a smile, put it back together, but same problem of leaking gas around the carburetor. Next day, took bowl apart, experimented with the float tang that regulates gas flow at the pin valve, and finally success. Local small engine repair folks told me they knew of nothing that would work other than a replacement float. Had used similar glue on an outboard motor lower gear housing and still working fine after several years.

Received my $118 (incl shipping) bargain "Chinese" generator from Amazon, NIB. Found it had been dropped, the foot had sunk (smashed) thru the styrofoam packing. The front panel including the air cleaner area was cracked with a piece broken off. Started and tested OK - actually runs very well. Called Amazon, "she" asked me "if I send the parts at no charge, can you fixit yourself?" I said yes.

BTW, Purchased the generator to power LiPoly battery chargers - charge RC airplane batteries at the flying field - many, of not most flying fields do not have electricity.



1) after one "run", the fitting attached to the fuel tank (above the petcock) started leaking. The connection was not tight enough. This is a straight ttread (not pipe thread) with a rubber "compression" bushing. After removal, I wound teflon tape around the threads, and under the place where the rubber compression grommet goes, so that when fitting was screwed into the gas tank, the threads were very tight fitting (because of the teflon tape) when hand tightened. When all was aligned, tightened with wrench to apprx 8 or 10 ft-lb.



2) Replacement panel was not exactly the same - had to fabricate new mounting for the capacitor, and power plug cover, and several other tweaks to get all to fit.



Disturbing Discovery; the wiring was not packed/secured properly - wiring was in contact with several vibrating parts, causing the wiring insulation to begin wear away (chafe) - this would eventually cause a "ground out" (cause a short to ground).



Once the front panel was repaired, and in place --- read on



** repairmans "pro" tip **. Remove the gas tank so you have access from the top. Cover the power wires with large shrink tubing (so it fits over the power wire(s) connectors) and tie wrap (somewhat loosely) - be sure that no wires touch the engine/generator or fuel tank (protect insulation from chafing), Then put gas tank on last. Inspect wiring using flashlight to double check that no wiring is touching anything where vibration would wear away the wire insulation.



Finally, I'm still pleased with the generator considering the price. I just had to finish the "quality".

Delivered on time, included oil, some assembly required. Bolts for handles are soft/low quality, so had to replace one that when overtightened, broke, with a hardened bolt. Other than that, this generator starts right up with no hesitation. Instructions funny--translated from Chinese. Missing info: You need to turn on the generator switch, in addition to opening the fuel line and choke to start. Otherwise, pull and pull and pull and nothing will happen. Provides wattage advertised. Check with multimeter since it does not have a meter on the unit. Got the generator before all the hurricanes, at a great price.

I purchased this generator a couple of weeks ago. It was delivered 1 day early on 8/28/2008 three days before hurricane Gustov passed 60 miles to my west. Our power went down for 53 hours. This generator performed flawlessly for 53 hours of continuous use. I never shut it off. It powered my well,refrigerator,freezer,TV and really everything but my air conditioner.It is quite fuel efficient and moderately quiet. I just got mine today. Easy to put the wheels and handles on, in less than 15 minutes, had it up and running, STARTED ON FIRST PULL. The generator is reasonably quiet, compared to some I've heard. Powered hand tools just fine, all the switches and controls are convenient and well placed. A well built machine, manual says it has a brushless generator, which tends to be maintenance free. Tires are airless-NO FLATS. Engine is 11 HP, NOT 13 as it says on Amazons title, the weight is also around 200 pounds, not 147 as stated. THIS ENGINE DOES NOT HAVE A SPARK ARRESTOR. If that is important, installation of one shouldn't be too difficult. If the specifications fill the bill for you, do not hesitate, I like mine. FREE shipping was a big plus++++.
