I bought this inverter elsewhere, and have not had any of the problems described in other reviews. I use it as a means to provide power to my laptop and other small items in my apartment during power outages. I haven't used the cigarette lighter adapter for this, as I am directly connecting the alligator clips to a Group 27 size car battery. I tested this setup, and I had no problem powering my laptop and an old inefficient (vintage 1987) 14" CRT monitor (a total of about 200 watts) for 5 hours before I decided I didn't want to damage the battery, and shut the inverter down. The monitor had a very slow horizontal scan line moving down the screen, nothing obnoxious. The fan is somewhat noisy, but that doesn't bother me. Next time I have a power outage, I can connect a surge strip to this inverter and run my cable modem, router, laptop, a CRT monitor, and charge my cell phone through the USB port or the regular wall outlet charger, all at the same time.
Bottom line: This inverter works well and reliably for me.

its a great product, however they shoul educate peopke on its actual capabilities!! this is not a 400 watt inverter unless you hardwire it to your battery. sothe plug-in feature is a moot point because if you decide to use it via your cig lighter it s the same as any 10 dollar 50 watt inverter. also even when hardwired and up to full potential, certain things that are rated at this wattage simply wont work, even w/ the 750 watt inverter because they draw more amperage at start up. these include vacuums, saws, and other things w/motors that draw a lot of amperage at start up1. it is great for charging batteries and some light stuff. so dont buy it unless you intend to install it directly to the battery or be ready to be disappointed.

I have no idea why this product is so poorly rated. If you think you can plug in a mini-fridge and blender for your road trip you will be disappointed by almost every inverter on the market. This inverter charged the battery on my 17" laptop while the laptop was in use. I haven't found any inverters in this price range that claim to be able to do that. On a separate trip, I was able to power an iPod and home stereo system (two speakers and a subwoofer) through the cigarette lighter. It was awesome for tailgating but you should be aware that the modified sine wave causes some very slight buzzing in the background. Once I turned the iPod up and the speakers down it was impossible to hear the buzzing unless you had your ear up to the speaker between songs. In this price range, I wouldn't even waste time looking for an inverter that produces a true sine wave (but if you find one, email me). Be reasonable. If you're going to be drawing 300 watts, obviously you'll need to connect directly to the battery. Yes, B&D COULD make an inverter that supplies 400w through the lighter but its foolish to think that every car's electrical system can handle that kind of strain. As best I can tell, this will not kill your battery. When I drained the battery the inverter shut off and the alarm sounded. Simple. And, yes, there was enough power in the battery to start the car.
BOTTOM LINE: Its worth at least $40. If you have some basic electronic knowledge you should be able to make your own reasonable assumptions about what this thing can do.

This inverter will only go up tp 80W throught your lighter port. My laptop runs at 89W. Couldnt use it for its intended use and outside of box didnot state this wattage limitation. Shame on Black and Decker!

I bought this inverter to replace my vector 175w inverter that died after 10 years of intermittent use. When I found out that Black& Decker had taken over the vector line I was a little worried but the B&D seems to work as well or better than the Vector. I use this inverter on a marine deep cycle battery to power a small DVD player in my popup camper and to recharge my zune mp3 player while on the road. The fact that the cooling fan cycles with demand saves alot of 12v battery power.
